They are an intensely great band. Unfortunately, I tend not to listen to them though. Those lyrics hit me hard (as they seem to with many trans people). Laura Jane Grace has all my respect. <3

Lauras solo stuff is really the best they put out anymore. Everything since Searching has been downhill in my opinion, but man this post brings back memories.

Oh yeah, her solo stuff puts chills down my spine.
I don’t listen to them enough to know if they’ve been going downhill, but I know transitioning is hard as balls (lulz) and it can have an incredible impact on your work, art, your entire life. And stuff like that sometimes has an incredible impact on the perceived quality of a band.

I’ll admit I’m kinda “that guy” with AM!, I love their old stuff ( Reinventing Axl Rose is pretty much my high school soundrack). I won’t presume to know ANYTHING about the transition process, but I will say that, although I don’t like the full band’s stuff so much anymore, her solo work took a pretty good upswing in quality after she went public, to the point I and my friends assumed getting that out in the open was freeing to a significant degree as an artist.

Transitioning and going public will do that...free to express yourself, free from hiding in the shadows. :)
Their new stuff seems to cater to a broader audience, which as you now see, means that some old fans get turned off. :(

They’ve also had some turnover, which is always complicating. Laura was always great at making music that worked with just an acoustic guitar and vocals. And the old stuff was always pretty much that, with some distortion added. Crime, Disco, Axl, all stripped down simple albums with just a SHIT TON of passion to carry them through. But I think now the music has been made too complicated and cleaned up to go with the writing style (in my as-you-can-tell-not-so humble opinion). Which is why her stripped down solo work, with a single vision, is so much purer. In my mind it’ll always be AM! playing in all white to 50 people in the shitty old Emo’s, and every single person in the crowd knowing and screaming every word.
